Celebration of summer

After spending the winter buried in snow and ice, at long last spring has arrived and summer is just around the corner. Most of us have turned our attention from indoor projects that kept us out of winter’s fury to embracing the great outdoors.

With that in mind, we greet the warm weather with our annual home and garden edition of Her magazine.

On the cover, meet Korrin Schriver. The 36-year-old science teacher is at the forefront of aquaponics and hydroponics through her work alongside Convivium Urban Farmstead in Dubuque. Learn about what she’s doing with this technology that dates back centuries and how she hopes it will impact new approaches to greenhouse gardening.

We also offer features on what to look forward to in garden beds this season, how to plant a tree, where you can go locally for a great hike and how you can incorporate Living Coral, Pantone’s Color of the Year, into your spring and summer color palette.

Many might know Rylynn McQuillen for her innate fashion sense through her Bluff Street boutique, Fig Leaf. She invites readers to share her other passion for antiquing and how to give new and creative life into objects of old.

We also aquaint you with two women behind volunteer efforts at local gardens and let you know how you, too, can get involved.

Last but not least, check out a savory recipe fit for a Mother’s Day brunch.

Happy summer!
